Overview
The Unsteady State Heat Transfer Unit investigates how temperature within a solid body changes with time when it is suddenly subjected to a temperature change, a phenomenon known as transient or unsteady-state heat conduction. Test specimens of different geometries (sphere, cylinder, slab) are heated and then quenched, while temperature-time histories are recorded. The experiments enable determination of Biot number, Fourier number, and thermal diffusivity, and allow comparison of experimental results with theoretical Heisler chart predictions. It is a fundamental study for processes involving rapid heating or cooling such as quenching, pasteurisation, and sterilisation.
