Overview
The Pool Boiling Apparatus allows observation and study of the different regimes of pool boiling: nucleate boiling, transition boiling, and film boiling. A submerged heater element in a transparent vessel heats a pool of liquid (typically water), and heat flux versus surface superheat is measured and plotted as the boiling curve. Students can identify and observe bubble nucleation sites, critical heat flux, and film boiling conditions. The apparatus validates the theoretical boiling curve and provides understanding of heat transfer mechanisms crucial in steam generators, nuclear reactors, and refrigeration evaporators.
