Overview
The Dropwise and Filmwise Condensation Apparatus provides a visual and quantitative comparison of the two modes of condensation on vertical tube surfaces. One tube is coated (hydrophobic) to promote dropwise condensation while another has a plain surface exhibiting filmwise condensation. Steam condenses on both tubes and condensate collection rates are compared. Students observe the higher heat transfer rates achieved in dropwise condensation and measure condensate flow rates to determine heat transfer coefficients for each mode. The apparatus highlights the role of surface wettability in condensation and its industrial implications in steam condensers and heat exchangers.
