Overview
The Sedimentation Studies Apparatus is used to investigate the settling behaviour of solid particles in a liquid suspension under gravity. Batch sedimentation experiments in transparent graduated cylinders allow measurement of the mud line (clear-liquid/suspension interface) height versus time, from which zone settling velocities and sedimentation curves are derived. Students apply the Kynch theory of sedimentation to construct flux plots, determine critical underflow concentration, and design settling tank dimensions. The apparatus is fundamental to the design of gravity thickeners, clarifiers, and centrifuges used in water treatment, mining, and pharmaceutical processing.
