Hydrodynamics of Packed Bed

AEC-MMTL-005

An apparatus to study the hydrodynamic behaviour and flow regimes in a gas-liquid co-current or counter-current packed bed.

Overview

The Hydrodynamics of Packed Bed apparatus investigates the complex flow patterns that occur when gas and liquid flow simultaneously through a packed column. The apparatus measures pressure drop, liquid holdup, and flooding velocity as functions of gas and liquid flow rates, mapping the operating regimes from trickling flow to pulsing to flooding. Students construct flow regime maps (modified Sherwood flooding correlation), determine flooding and loading points, and study their importance in the safe design of absorption, stripping, and distillation columns. Understanding packed bed hydrodynamics is critical for setting maximum operating flow rates in gas-liquid contactors.
