Overview
The Spray Tower apparatus uses a nozzle or spray head to disperse one phase as fine droplets into a counter-current stream of the other phase within a vertical glass column. The large interfacial area created by the droplet spray promotes efficient mass transfer, simulating industrial spray scrubbers, spray extractors, and spray dryers. Students evaluate spray droplet size distribution (qualitatively), mass transfer coefficient, extraction efficiency, and the effect of flow rate and nozzle type on tower performance. The apparatus is used to compare spray contact efficiency against packed and plate columns.
