Overview
The Solid-Liquid Extraction Packed Bed Type apparatus uses a fixed bed of solid particles through which solvent percolates, dissolving and carrying out the soluble component (leachate). The packed bed design represents percolation leaching used in heap leaching of ores, sugar extraction, and ground coffee brewing. Students study the effect of solvent flow rate, temperature, particle size, and bed height on extraction efficiency and breakthrough time. Mass transfer coefficients and overall extraction yield are determined by measuring inlet and outlet solute concentrations at different time intervals.
