Overview
The Simple Batch Distillation apparatus heats a binary liquid mixture in a flask, collects distillate fractions at different times, and measures their compositions to study the variation of distillate composition as the still-pot composition changes. This is the simplest form of distillation without any reflux or rectification. Students validate the Rayleigh equation relating initial and final still compositions to the integral of the equilibrium relationship. The experiment provides fundamental understanding of batch distillation operations used in pharmaceutical, specialty chemical, and essential oil industries where flexibility and small batch sizes are required.
