Absorption in Wetted Wall Column

AEC-MSTL-011

A wetted wall column for studying gas-liquid mass transfer rates in a defined laminar liquid film geometry.

Overview

The Absorption in Wetted Wall Column apparatus uses a precisely defined geometry of a falling liquid film on the inner wall of a vertical tube with gas flowing co-currently or counter-currently through the core. The well-defined hydrodynamics of this geometry allow accurate determination of liquid-phase and gas-phase mass transfer coefficients without the complexity of packing. Students determine the mass transfer coefficient as a function of liquid and gas flow rates, compare experimental results with penetration theory predictions, and study the effect of concentration driving force on absorption rate. The wetted wall column is a fundamental research instrument for measuring interfacial mass transfer rates.
