Overview
The Swenson Walker Crystallizer is a continuous trough-type crystalliser consisting of a U-shaped jacketed trough with a slow-turning helical agitator (ribbon screw) that moves crystals along the trough while cooling water in the jacket reduces solution temperature. The helical agitator gently promotes crystal movement and surface renewal without excessive attrition. Students study crystal yield, crystal size, and the effect of cooling rate and residence time on crystal quality. The Swenson Walker crystallizer is used industrially for sodium sulphate, sodium acetate, and similar salt crystallisation where crystal breakage must be minimised.
