Overview
The Mass Transfer with and Without Chemical Reaction apparatus allows direct comparison of physical absorption and reactive (chemical) absorption by absorbing a gas such as CO2 into pure water (physical absorption) and into NaOH solution (reactive absorption) in the same column under identical hydrodynamic conditions. Students determine enhancement factors, reaction rate constants, and Hatta numbers, demonstrating how chemical reaction dramatically increases absorption rates and reduces the required column height. The experiment provides insight into industrial reactive absorption processes such as acid gas scrubbing, amine treating, and chlorine absorption.
