Overview
The Single Cylinder Four Stroke Petrol Engine Test Rig is one of the most fundamental teaching apparatus in a thermodynamics or IC engine laboratory. The engine is coupled to a rope brake or electrical dynamometer, with instrumentation to measure fuel consumption, air consumption, exhaust temperature, cooling water flow, and jacket water temperature. Students measure brake power, indicated mean effective pressure (from indicator diagram if available), mechanical efficiency, volumetric efficiency, and thermal efficiency. A complete heat balance (energy balance) can be drawn up identifying energy going to brake power, cooling water, exhaust, and radiation. The rig provides comprehensive understanding of energy conversion in spark-ignition engines.
