Overview
The Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) Single Cylinder Four Stroke Diesel Engine Test Rig features a tilting cylinder block mechanism that allows the engine compression ratio to be changed from approximately 12:1 to 18:1 without stopping the engine. The rig is coupled to an eddy current or rope brake dynamometer and fully instrumented for performance and combustion analysis. Students measure brake power, BSFC, thermal efficiency, and P-V diagram at multiple compression ratios and compare with theoretical diesel cycle predictions. The VCR engine rig is a unique educational tool that directly demonstrates the thermodynamic advantage of higher compression ratio in improving diesel engine thermal efficiency.
