Pressure Distribution in Journal Bearing

AEC-TML-013

An apparatus to measure and map the oil film pressure distribution in a plain journal bearing under load.

#JournalBearing#OilFilmPressure#HydrodynamicBearing#ReynoldsEquation
Calibration cert included 48-hr quote

Overview

The Pressure Distribution in Journal Bearing apparatus allows detailed experimental measurement of the hydrodynamic oil film pressure at multiple circumferential and axial positions in a plain cylindrical bearing while supporting a radially applied load. Pressure tappings connected to a multi-tube manometer board reveal the pressure wedge formed by the rotating journal and its relationship to load, speed, and oil viscosity. Students plot 2D and 3D pressure maps, determine the angular extent of the pressure film, calculate load capacity from the integrated pressure profile, and compare with Reynolds equation solutions. The experiment is central to understanding why plain bearings can support large loads without surface contact despite the absence of rolling elements.
